The Rivers State Police has confirmed the arrest of 22 traders who violated the states lockdown order by entering the state from Abia and Anambra State.
The State Health Commissioner, Professor Chike Princewill said the arrested traders will be tested and examined to affirm their Coronavirus status. Chike said after the screening is done, the culprit will be made to face the consequences which have been put in place for offenders. He however affirmed that to protect the Rivers people from the deadly Coronavirus, the government has made a law that enables perpetrators of the lockdown order in the state to be prosecuted.
Nonetheless, while the traders denied knowing about the state lockdown order, the driver of the truck, Chijioke John argued that he was traveling from Onitsha to Onne but saw the traders standing by the roadside, he picked some of them at Ihiala, Anambra State. He said he only rendered them help since they were women and stranded.
The health commissioner however asserted that it is inhumane and annoying that a transporter would convey human beings in a container, just to beat the law.
